Aleppo and its suburbs is the most famous region in planting pistachio, this had a great impact of calling pistachio after the city name (Fistoq Halabi). It is well known since the Ashouries which was usually found in the Middle Eastern countries especially the Mediterranean world. Statistics shows that pistachio nut was first cultivated in Western Asia and Al-Sham countries.
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has reported a great increase in pistachio cultivation since 1960’s from 32 Tons to reach around 850,000 tons by the end of the twentieth century. It is well known that Syria is the forth country all around the world in producing pistachio. It produced around 80,000 Ton in 2006. The Syrian government statistics shows great increase in the production of pistachio during the last few years; this was a result of the huge demand of the farmers to plant it. Aleppo, Hama and Edleb are the most well known provinces in cultivating pistachio. Ashouri, Nab Al-Jamal, Batouri, Oleimi, and Grahi are well known types of pistachio in Syria.
